    What Is a Thai Keyboard?

A Thai keyboard is an on-screen tool that lets you type Thai characters directly in your browser — on any device, anywhere in the world. Instead of installing a Thai language pack on your operating system or buying a specialized keyboard, you simply click or tap the characters you need.

Our tool supports the full Thai character set: consonants, vowels, tone marks, and punctuation — exactly as they appear on a standard Thai Kedmanee keyboard layout.

    Understanding the Thai Keyboard

If you're new to typing in Thai, it helps to understand how the Thai keyboard is structured. The standard layout used in Thailand — and in this tool — is called the Kedmanee layout, named after its designer, Sod Kedmanee. It was designed in 1942 and remains the official standard for Thai keyboards today.

Unlike English keyboards, which place letters based on typing frequency (QWERTY), the Kedmanee layout organizes Thai characters based on their type. Consonants that are used more frequently are placed on the home row for easier access. Vowels, tone marks, and less common characters are distributed across the other rows.

One important thing to note about Thai is that it's not written left-to-right in a simple linear sequence the way English is. Vowels can appear above, below, before, or after the consonant they belong to. Tone marks also appear above consonants. This means the visual position of characters on the screen may not match the order you typed them — and that's completely normal. The keyboard handles this correctly.

    Keyboard Overview:

    • Consonants (พยัญชนะ): Thai has 44 consonant characters, though only 42 are currently in use.
    • Vowels (สระ): Thai has 32 vowel forms. Some are written before the consonant, some after, some above, and some below.
    • Tone marks (วรรณยุกต์): Thai has 5 tones and 4 tone mark symbols (the fifth tone is the default and requires no mark).
    • Special characters: The keyboard also includes Thai numerals (๐–๙), punctuation, and symbols used in formal Thai writing.

    Thai Typing Tips for Beginners

Type consonants first, then vowels. In Thai, you almost always type the consonant of a syllable before the vowel.

Tone marks go after the consonant. When a syllable needs a tone mark, type the consonant first, then any final consonant (if present), then the tone mark.

Thai has no spaces between words. Traditional Thai writing doesn't use spaces to separate words the way English does.

Thai numerals vs Arabic numerals. Thai has its own set of numerals (๑, ๒, ๓...) but Arabic numerals (1, 2, 3) are also widely used in everyday Thai writing.

Practice on a layout chart. If you're learning to touch-type in Thai, print out a Kedmanee layout chart and practice associating the physical keys with their Thai equivalents.
